In the Beginning...John Henry DewsIn 1813 John Henry Dews started business on his own as a coal merchant and haulage contractor with a horse and cart at Lockwood,
Huddersfield. This continued into the 20th century, then upgraded from horse to steam power and in later years onto diesel. In 1960 when
the demand for coal diminished, with George Dews at the helm, haulage became the mainstream business, particularly for David Brown Gears.
George Warburton
In 1927 George Warburton and Tom Buckley commenced business as coal merchants and haulage contractors at Station Yard, Lockwood, Huddersfield with a depot at Thornton Lodge, Huddersfield. In 1950 Warburton bought Buckley's share of the business. He continued trading until 1959 when he sold the coal business and concentrated on
haulage, continuing to work for David Brown Gears (now manufacturing Challenger Tank Gearboxes and touring car motor sport sequential gearboxes and where DB comes from in Aston Martin
car models, see David Brown link) at Lockwood, Huddersfield. J. H. Dews & Sons Ltd. and George Warburton In 1960 J. H. Dews & Sons Ltd joined forces with George Warburton
and took out a contract to jointly work for David Brown Gears with appropriately livered vehicles. The new company retained the Dews name (already a limited company) and increased it's fleet from a joint
eight to twelve vehicles. Formerly the Dews vehicles were dark blue; Warburton's were red. Red ultimately became the colour of the new
fleet. George Henry Dews and George Warburton then ran the company until 1978 when Trevor Dews and Peter Warburton the respective sons took over the running of the business and extended the customer base considerably.
In 1981 Walter Holroyd Ltd was purchased, a haulage contractor based in Brighouse, West Yorkshire. From the purchase extra vehicles
were gained but more importantly was the large site and three warehouses for storage & distribution. As of this year, 2000, we have changed the vehicle livery slightly from J. H. DEWS & SONS LTD to
DEWS HAULAGE on the new vehicles and stationery. You can see the changes if you look closely at the photo's.
As of January 2001, Trevor Dews & Peter Warburton have retired and passed on their posts as Managing Directors to their respective sons, Craig Dews & Tim Warburton.
